Which images come to mind
when you hear the word sustainability?
Take a moment to
search for a few
in a popular search engine. Do
you feel the ones you find conform to your own? Most are
environmentally oriented and symbolize the concept of sustainability with elements from nature.
Environmental
consultants confirm this. In order to acquire
projects, they have to almost assume a missionary role in order to
convince managers and entrepreneurs that there is a need
for a more environmental orientation.
The environmental perspective is, indeed, the foundation on which real and
effective solutions concerning sustainability can be achieved
and, in that respect, the definition described
above is not wrong. However, it only focuses on one of sustainability’s
components. From the business perspective, good economic arguments are a
necessary prerequisite for closer attention to environmental friendliness. Life
cycle assessments show how well these two aspects can work together.
